Restaurant Review: Matram
Pan Indian Restaurant
Matram in Dwarka is a welcome addition to the area’s dining map, bringing together flavours from across India under one roof. Dwarka, long underserved in terms of standalone restaurants, now has a pan-Indian option that locals can confidently head to for both everyday meals and celebratory dining.
Atmospherics
The design of Matram draws inspiration from a traditional South Indian home. A central courtyard sets the tone, lending the space a relaxed, homely charm. Wooden elements, open spaces, and thoughtful lighting give it a character that feels warm rather than formal. Seating is generous and comfortable, making it well-suited to family dining or larger groups. For Dwarka residents, it provides a refreshing setting that is distinct from the usual mall-and-hotel formats that dominate the area.
Food
The menu at Matram, by chef Suresh Fartyal, is wide-ranging, with a balance of regional dishes and familiar favourites. Starters such as Kashmiri nadru fritters and shakarkand kachalu chaat work well as Indian replacements for fries and salads, while the tender coconut chilly fry—with stir-fried coconut, bell peppers, and curry leaves—stood out as a genuine find. The bhoot jolokia chicken tikka, Kerala mutton pepper fry, and rum-spiced tiger prawn tandoori covered the spice spectrum with confidence.
For mains, the bichhu booti pahadi nettle saag with ragi roti was earthy and unusual, while the smoky pineapple curry was the meal’s surprise highlight. Chettinad chicken masala was tasty and kosha mangsho with luchi stayed faithful to its Bengali roots. The Kashmiri guchi morel pulao was rich, layered, and full of flavours. A coconut-flavoured kulfi at the end struck the right note to close a meal that covered remarkable ground. Full marks to the kitchen for executing such diverse dishes with consistency.
Plus and Minus
Owner Shubh Sharma deserves credit for envisioning and delivering a restaurant that Dwarka can be proud of. Matram is a strong attempt at presenting pan-Indian cuisine. It raises the level of dining in the area and has already become popular with locals.
